Home Sweet What? (Open)(warning: nudity)

Post by Windra »

Three days.

It took three long says to creep through the brambles, skip over felled logs, dodge the uncannily hungry predator here and there. Two close calls with a persistent grizzly and an obnoxious heat wave later, Naira crossed the threshold into someplace entirely new.

She could have sworn home was in this direction ... Now Naira was doubting herself. When gad all these evergreen trees sprung up?

You're In a place where unicorns talk, let alone exist. Are you really asking questions right now?

The Reaver passed a suspicious section of burned grass and continued on. May as well push forward ... The sky was growing darker. Thick mammatus clouds were rolling in from behind her and the thickened air clung to her skin (along with an unwelcome amount of mosquitos). Rumbling echoes of thunder were getting louder ...

... and just as a glare of lightning licked the sky to her south, a familiar building of wood and stone came into view.

Finally!

Her exposed back and bruised bones screamed protest, but the fatigued undead broke into a sprint. She's been through enough in the (how long had it been?) and getting struck by a bolt was not on her agenda. Alabaster talons clicked up the stairs. The door wasn't locked - it usually never was - so the Reaver streamed inside. Just in time: a harsh rain shaft brought with it buckets.

Brushing a swathe of bloodsuckers from her bare shoulder (how undignifying to run through the woods in just pants and a bra), Naira peered into her ... strangely quiet home. She half-expected a red-skinned humanoid to come bounding at her, all grins and giddy speech.

"Scar? You home?"

No answer. Huh. Maybe the V-ACT was put being the social butterfly everybody was terrified of.

Naira shrugged. That was all well and good. She needed a bath anyhow.

The Reaver hobbled into the upstairs bathroom, kicking off her pants and undergarments once passing the threshold and closing the door behind her. Removing the bra came with tears and hissed agony as fabric pulled away from the blood, gore, and bone it had been caked to for days.

Naira kicked in the spigot. As the sizeable bath filled (think hot tub), the Reaver fished several small, round, physician black stones and a towel from the closet. She plinked each rock into the water. Steam rose from the liquid, spilling warmth into the room.

She dumped hydrogen peroxide into the bath as well, then slid in. Sinking into the depths came with a softly expelled, "Haaaaaa ~" Relief soaked into every muscle. Hot, fizzing water needled between the vertebrae of her barren spine. Initial pain faltered into an intoxicating calm.

Soap here, soap there. Scrub the hair. Enjoy the scent of cleanliness. A quick dip to rinse ... Naira leaned carefully back, propping her arms onto the tub, closed her eyes with a smile -

- and when she opened them again, darkness crept over the windows. The rain had stopped. The room was illuminated with candles. So was the whole cabin.

Thankfully the hot stones continued to do their work so she wasn't soaking in frigid water the whole time. Naira rubbed her eyes. " ... Did I fall asleep ... ?"

There were fresh clothes on a chair next to the tub, crisply folded. Huh. "Scarlet? You here?" she yelled out.

Nothing.

What was going on?

Naira unwillingly stepped from the tub and into stone floor. Drain the water ... Dry ... A quick stop to the cabinet to look for medicines. They were mainly for visitors - because of her instantaneous metabolism, Naira did not have to worry about caring for injuries ... unless they came from something ethereal. Then she had to deal with the threat of infection and slow healing like mortals did.

She was lucky this wound hadn't ended her.

Applying the antibiotic cream was tricky. The bandages were worse. After 30 minutes of struggling, she finally dressed her wounds and then her body.

Draconic feet plodded through the cabin. Indeed, every torch was lit. The place was brimming with light, but no sign of Scarlet ...

Naira hobbled her way downstairs - past the fire pit, past the kitchen, and towards the more modern furniture set of a recliner and sofa. Wearily she set down on the latter stomach first - and exhaustion took hold.

Arm dangling limply off the side, the Reaver fell asleep.

The following ... minutes? hours? days? ... we're a cloudy visage of incomprehensible actions. Naida knew she'd awoken several times at the command of her bladder, or her thirst, but it was never for long. In fact she often stirred to wonder if whatever happened had occurred at all.

Night and day blended into an exotic smoothie. Fatigue was a commanding force, taking back what had been so unfairly withheld when the clock stopped in Greenwood.

There were dreams. Pleasant. Laughing with comrades. Snowboarding. Fickle meetings with unique twists.

And there were nightmares. Memories of inflicted torture. Screaming from unseen shadows. Eyelids forced open to watch her friends through a swirling window while a beartrap voice hissed into her ear, "You'll watch. You'll watch as I make you destroy them."

Cold sweats and tears. Naira jerked and yelled and whimpered, only to come to and realize her surroundings, then promptly succumb again.

...

When eyes nearly glued shut from sand finally forced themselves open, the Reaver was no longer certain of the passage of time. She'd no calender to go by: just the sun and the stars.

(An outsider looking in would note that two weeks had gone by.)

Sunlight streamed through the windows. Naira pushed upright with surprising buoyancy. The aching bones that ailed her so before were no longer creaking. Her body did not scream, nor did her back burn.

"I feel ... Good."

Spoken to nobody. She suddenly wished for a pot of coffee ...

First, the bathroom to check her wounds ... only to find her dressings fresh and clean. Mismatched bruises were a thing of the past. Her exposed spinal column welcomed the stretching of flesh across it, the deepest gouge having scabbed over. That was ... fast.

There was coffee to be had, but her stockpile of camellia sinensus was still potent. Naira brought a kettle to a boil over the fire and allowed the tea to steep while she set about lurking the cabin.

Still no sign of Scarlet. Not wholly unusual. The Crimson Head did her own thing and would turn up eventually.

Naira passed the bookshelf, casually running her fingers along the spines. Not a speck of dust to be had. Really, she couldn't have been gone in Greenwood for that long ... Right?

Had it all been an illusion?

Her gaping back said otherwise.

Dragon talons clacked along the floor. Silver hide stepped out the door and into bursting sunlight. A rejuvenating aroma of pine needles and flowers greeted her warmly.

"It's good to be home ... "

The setting was unusual. Her cabin was not originally nestled in the depth of an evergreen forest ... But mysterious things were trademark here. Naira shrugged it off, stepping around the cabin to her fenced in garden-in-progress.

And here, she halted.

The herbs were endless. The fruits had ripened. Vegetable bushels bloomed. Further past the garden, fantastical flowers wavered in a breeze-induce dance around the apiary, beckoning honeybees to feast.

When Naira was last here, everything had been ... seeds.

The Reaver swallowed. Coffee sounded more necessary now.

"How long," she whispered, "was I out of Deep Forest?"

It had been a few weeks since Entropy had encountered a half-draconic woman in the Forest and tussled with a fox by a stream. That issue had been resolved and Entropy had parted ways with that company, but she had intended to look Naira up again before long. But she had gotten... sidetracked.

She ran through the Forest with ragged breath right now. She needed to preserve the magical energy she'd regained, in case she was being pursued. Pain of injuries made it hard to focus, and she needed all the power she could muster if she had to fight again. Running blind, she had fled away from the mountains and into the northern part of the forest, where the evergreens grew.

Her energy was running out again now. She'd been running for too long. She had to find... shelter...

As Entropy pressed through a copse of trees, a cabin came into view. She paused briefly to consider the risks, but... had to hope whoever lived there would be willing to let her in. She couldn't go much further.

Drawing closer, vision already blurring, she saw the owner emerge into the garden. Entropy's pace was rapidly slowing from a run to a lurching stumble...

"H-hey...!" she called out in the loudest voice she could muster.

And with that, her feet gave out. She dropped forward, catching herself on her hands and knees, and feeling a jolt of pain in her arm from doing so. She made a weak effort to rise again, but slumped forward instead.

"Help..." she managed to groan, as the world became a swirling, darkening blur around her.

Indeed, she was followed. A hunting party of kobolds with scales glittering in oranges, bronzes, and reds trickles down from the mountains in pursuit. The succubus was given a head start - not by choice, but bwcause her escape had caught them unaware - but they were gaining fast. Too fast.

The felcaeri slipped through the evergreens. Kobolds began to emerge from. All sides, closing the distance. 100 feet. 90. 80.

70.

Entropy skipped past the peculiar scorched mark, some 20 feet in diameter and spanning off on either side through the trees until it could no longer be seen.

"Pok! POK!" screeched the lead. His entourage skid to a halt behind him.

The kobolds spanned the burned rift, not daring to step foot across it.

"Nomeno ui vi tisvelk goawy."

"Jaciv geou suffwr jacioniv haurach de wer sjachi."

Glaring wistfully after lost prey, the lead turned. With a huff, he motioned their retreat.

--

Well ... No doubt that tea was well and breqed by now. Naira could clear the blossoming fog in her brain over some much desired, and well earned, caffeine.

She'd hardly flicked into her heel when a familiar figure lurched from the treeline. Running. Exhausted. Damn near dead on her feet. The succubus' legs failed her. Naira broke into a sprint before her knees could hit the ground.

"Entropy!" she hollered, eyes widening. Her arms reached out, cutting the diatance between them with a leap. "What the hell - !"

Caught her! The felcaeri slumped in her arms. Naira gave her a shake, shouting her name. No response. Catching her breath, she slid gloves fingers along her friend's neck, pressing for the carotid artery. There was a pulse, thank the gods, and her warm breath plumed across Naira's arm. Unconscious.

Naira didn't waste time. It was hot out. Summer was keeping a death grip on the woods. Heat was practically radiating off Entropy's skin.

"Let's get you inside," Naora told her prone ally.

She lacked the reserves of strength from before, but was still strong enough to hoise the succubus up into a bridal carry. Naira carted her into the cabin, nestling the limp body on the couch she'd claimed as a bed not long ago. Her good eye looked the woman over for injuries.

For a home with no functioning air conditioner, it was considerably cooler and breezy within.

To the outside world, a few minutes passed before Entropy's eyes fluttered, then snapped open. She drew in a sharp breath as her body jolted in a disoriented panic set off by the realization that she'd passed out. For a brief but terrifying moment, she was afraid she'd been found by the kobolds and taken back to their lair where a brutal death likely awaited her.

But as her senses returned, she realized this was no underground pit she was laying in, and she wasn't bound up like an animal awaiting slaughter. Her most recent memories began to return, and she remembered running towards the cabin. Falling down. Being caught by... someone familiar... before the world had spun away.

Everything was still spinning, though it was coming into focus. Her body hurt everywhere, she felt sick with exhaustion, and her throat was dry as sand.

She wanted to fall asleep more than anything, but she needed to know where she was, and she needed water. She started to stir, just a little so she could look around, but then she started to cough. It was a weak cough, but her eyes watered up, and she had to rub them dry. She tried to remember who it was she saw earlier.

"Naira...?" she eventually asked, not knowing if anyone was even around, her voice weak and barely audible.

"Hey girl," responded the Reaver, halting long enough to shower Entropy with a comforting smile. "Yeah. It's me. Don't worry, you're in good hands."

Truthfully, Naira didn't know how long the felcaeri would stay conscious. It was a small wonder she'd gotten this far considering the shape she was in ... Though when her own voyage had been equally hellish, determination (or desperation?) was good girl to be had.

The succubus looked parched, but it was imperative to triage the wounds before offering comfort. Besides, offering water to somebody going into shock was contraindicative. On that note -

"Sit tight, I'll be right back."

She was a silver blur rushing up the stairs to the bathroom. Gauze ... Hydrogen peroxide ... Triple antibiotic ointment ... Needle and thread ... Penicillin ... Alcohol? Shit. No alcohol. She was pretty sure there was everclear in the kitchen. That would do the trick.

With her arms overflowing with medical supplies, Naira happened a glance at the mirror, and ... Well ...

"That's new ... "

Now the reaver was sure it hadnt been like that this morning (afternoon?), but her hair was definitely not what it was. A far cry from the familiar brunette hues, frosty lockes of silver cascaded across her head with mesmerizing hints of steel blue. Icy. Eyebrows too. Naira gawked.

I am become the Silver Shroud.

Har har. (Hair hair).

She wanted to mess with it: run her fingers through it and wonder what the hell?! But the image of a wounded Entropy flashed through her mind and she snapped to attention.

Next to the kitchen, cramming the bottle of everclear grain alcohol into the already full arms. Naira turned to sprint back into the main room and immediately did a double take.

Strange incidence number 2 ... Somebody had poured her a cup of black tea from the kettle. Except Entropy hadn't moved and Scarlet was nowhere in sight ...

"Okay ... Okay, there's definitely somebody floating around," she grumbled, feelibg a clouded haze of apprehension glare iver her perception. "Thanks for that. You can come out now, yeah?"

Silence. Nothing but the succubus' pained breaths from the other room.

Naira huffed. She grabbed an empty tumbler and, balancing that on the mountain of goodies, approached Entropy. Dumping the supplies on the long coffee table, she filled the tumbler with everclear and helped Entropy sit up just enough so that she wouldn't choke on it.

"I know you need water," Naira crooned, "but chug the booze first. It'll help take the edge off the pain. I don't have any numbing agents ... I'm also gonna have to take your shirt off. Gnarly gash on your back, might have to stitch." Among other injuries ...

To make matters worse ... she absolutely felt her skin start to stick. There was a new buildup of humidity in the air. Another storm coming? For God's sake.

Entropy was fairly numb emotionally at the moment, but knowing that she really had stumbled into Naira's house took one big worry off her mind. She couldn't muster the voice to say anything in response, but she did give a faint, appreciative smile to her host.

As Naira temporarily left the room, Entropy closed her eyes to rest them. But with the adrenaline of her escape having worn off, and her senses awakening again, it really didn't feel like rest. She was just too tired to do anything else. Once she was fairly sure Naira was out of earshot, she let herself sob quietly, just a bit. As soon as she thought she heard Naira returning, she pushed that urge down and dried her eyes again.

Once Naira came back, Entropy let her help her sit up, though it wasn't pleasant. She took the tumbler Naira offered her, and first sniffed the contents. Then she did, in fact, chug it down rather quickly.

For a moment, Entropy looked inquisitively at nothing in particular, waiting for the effects to hit. Then she nodded as she felt the warmth rise to her skin.

"Well..." she said in a tone of consideration, just audible enough to be heard if you made an effort. "It's no Mûmakiller, but it'll do."

In the meantime, she started off the process of removing her shirt, really preferring to do that herself. It was rather badly mangled and caked with dried blood. But in better days, it had been a sleeveless, purple halter top with a mostly open back for her wings. She undid a series of strings that held it together in front, then sucked in some air as she took it off, tearing the cloth away from a few more deep cuts it had become stuck to.

"Go ahead and... stitch... if you have to..." Entropy breathed, putting on a brave face. "Pain is... a felcaeri's third parent."

Third parent, huh? If Naira didn't feel guilt before, she sure did now. "Lemme look it over first. Hopefully you won't have to have - "

Yeah. No. The reaver sucked in a breath.

She poured another glass of everclear. "You're ... You're gonna need this."

Giving Entropy some time to drink and process the liquor, Naira made one more pass to the bathroom. A quick swap of thread for fishing twine, a towel for the felcaeri to lay on so the peroxide and blood would dribble onto that and not the sofa ...

Naira grabbed a tank top from her own bedroom and, after a moment of forethought, ripped the back of it to allow room for Entropy's wings.

She returned to the living room, stretched the towel onto the sofa and gestured for Entropy to lay flat on her stomach. "I'll be as quick as I can," the reaver assured, using her teeth to bend a needle into a small hook. Naira poured more everclear, dipping the tool into it for quick sterilization. "But I can't promise this won't suck."

--

All in all, the process took maybe 30 minutes. Entropy's priority injuries were deep and plentiful. Naira didn't want to miss her mark and impede healing. She slathered antibiotic ointment on the stitched wounds and, after doctoring some of the more minor cuts, applied a large dressing to her back and wrapped gauze around Entropy's torso while taking care to give her wings room to move.

Naira replaced the alcohol with water and presented the clean tank top to Entropy.

"All finished," she cooed. "I have ... Questions about what the hell happened to you ... " A quick once over told Naira that the felcaeri may not be ready to divulge such information. "But why don't you crash first? I'm sure you can do with a decent meal, so I'll get something rolling."

Best be quick about it. The sky was getting dark and a low him of distant thunder told her that lightning and rain would soon be heading their way.

--

Once more to the bathroom to wash the gore from her fingers. But this time around, her eyes caught something else different in the mirror.

Her eyes caught something.

She could see out of her left one. There was no more milky glaze, just ... green. Bright green. Black slitted pupils and -

Her hand shot to her forehead, rubbing the smooth flesh present. Naira hadn't bothered with her usual headband for no reason in particular, so there was nothing to hide the ragged Nayee scar etched into it.

Except there was none

"What ... "

In a flash, Naira tore off her shirt and gave the rest of her body a once over in the mirror. Nothing but smooth, tanned skin. Not a mark to be seen from her past.

The ground suddenly felt like it was giving way. Her vision swam.

First her hair. Now ... This.

"What's happening to me?"

Kit laid comfortably in the tree branches of a large oak. She had her tanned hide of the raccoon she had killed with her. It lay draped over her front legs. She stayed in the same area from where the reaver and the other stranger left. She glanced down at the small stream. The fox wasn’t thirsty or hungry just yet. It had been a hot day in the forest. She closed her eyes and sniffed the breeze as it picked up causing the green leaves to upturn, exposing their underside to the sky. A thunderstorm was coming. Kit twitched her tail; she wasn’t in the mood to get soaked in the branches. Kit yawned before grabbing her hide in her mouth and jumped from her high advantage point.

With a light thud, the blue fox landed onto the forest floor. Now to find somewhere more interesting and dryer for when the rain arrives. Kit’s ears swiveled and her nose twitched. After several moments; she decided to head east.

Entropy sat quietly while Naira examined her injuries.

Meanwhile, she wandered back into the world of her thoughts.

She wanted to let herself feel like she was safe again. But... that felt too good to be true. Something in the back of her mind told her that as soon as she felt safe, the reptilian hunters would burst through the door and drag her back into their dark tunnels. She tried not to let her fear show.

She took the second glass of the alcoholic drink Naira had poured her. It really wasn't very strong by felcaeri standards. And it was just alcohol. She might just be able to catch a buzz off of it. Still, she went ahead and drank it while Naira was out of the room. She would take any numbing of her senses she could get, however minor. She also considered that it might just dull her anxiety too... But she wasn't going to resort to using it for that! She wasn't going to lose control of herself.

Naira returned, and Entropy drew in a breath to steady her resolve.

--

It hurt. But Entropy demanded of herself that she would endure it without complaint. She'd already gone through much worse. Her pride depended on being able to handle this.

--

Finally, it was over. Entropy did feel genuine relief about that, but she rewarded herself with a swelling of pride for having kept her resolve through it all.

It was good to know that she still could handle pain without crying and begging for mercy. She really had only done it to keep her cruel tormentors entertained, so that they would let her live a little longer. It hadn't been more than a performance...

... She didn't want to think about it. And that feeling was obviously plastered on her face, as Naira had started to ask her about what she'd been through, only to back away from the subject.

Entropy gave Naira a pained smile, then pulled the tank top on. Even with the extended opening in the back, it was tricky to get her wings through it. But she managed, and had the shirt properly donned after only a brief struggle, with no damage done to the item or herself.

Naira excused herself from the room again to go make something to eat. Entropy realized she was famished, but she was also tired. She drank the water down to finally quench her thirst, then lay back down on the couch and closed her eyes.

Thunder in the distance...

Whatever anyone else might have said, that was good to hear, as far as she was concerned. Listening to the wind picking up outside... let her relax, losing herself in the sound. She drifted off into the first sleep she had managed in days that wasn't forced on by sheer exhaustion...

What point was there in dwelling? Entropy was recovering downstairs, and probably very hungry. A storm was rolling in. Even if she had not been gone from the forest for long (though all the evidence pointed to tge contrary), and of the meat she'd had stored woukd have gone bad by now.

Definitely gonna have to clean out that fridge ...

But first ... Naira threw on her shirt and switched her fingerless gloves for actual gardening ones. Arming herself with a handheld shovel, a knife, and a basket (and a dagger ... Just in case ... ), the reaver stepped into the fading sunlight.

She grabbed what she could in terms of vegetables and fruit. Some blackberries. A dozen potatoes. Carrots. Tomatoes. Button mushrooms from a felled log.

"Would be better with some rabbit or venison ... Could make a nice stew ... "

No time for that now. Naira hadn't a chance to set up snares and wouldn't until after the rainfall. She didn't have a chance to check the condition of her bow and arrows ...

"It'll be easier to use that now that I can see from both eyes," she muttered.

Then laughed.
And kept laughing.

The sensation of mental shackles falling from her centuries-overworked body came with relief. Naira was not sure what happened in her isolation, but the vivid realization that she could no longer feel Kuro's influence over her sanity ... No longer sense the looming dread of her own fate coming to meet her ... Scars of a tortured past fading with the gift of renewal ...

She laughed.
And laughed.
And cried.

--

A good little haul. At the very least she could roast some legumes. Satisfying and nutritionally replenishing against the abuse Entropy had seen. The felcaeri's body needed and so, Naira thought, did she.

Still could use some meat ...

Naira slid the basket of goodies into the open doorway. Draconic talons started to step inside when she noticed movement from the corner of her eye. Something long and scales was slithering past the trees not 10 feet away. Probably nothing, but worth investigating.

Drawing her dagger, the reaver slipped after it. Reptilian eyes met ones of similar appearance not a moment after pursuing. Naira stopped, frowning. "Helloooo, chunky snake."

These were the woods, after all. She should expect to see boas and pythons and eat snakes. Still, this was honestly her first time comibg across one here.

It glanced briefly at her, then carried on. The snake slithered slowly across the earth. A quick glimpse at its body explained why its speed was lacking. It had just fed on something.

Snake meat wasn't bad. Naira would be a fool not to pounce.

"Sorry mate. Survival of the fittest, and all that."

Steel flashed.

Thunder roared.

--

It wasn't long before the cabin's chimney filled with smoke. Plumes of bountiful aromas - cooking meat, simmering goods - were carried aloft into the storm's accelerating breeze and dispersed into the pines.

The clouds drew closer. Rain started to fall in the distance and soon, the cabin was overtaken by the supercell's shadow.

Kit had traveled many miles in her quest to beat the storm. She was now getting upset due to being pelted by the rain. She easily jumped over a huge fallen tree. After she landed, a small smoke trail caught her attention on the horizon. Where there was smoke was a dwelling of sorts. Before she could journey forward, movement caught her attention. Kit looked to her left and met the gaze of a herd of deer. Kit dropped her raccoon pelt and twitched her nose. Without much thought, Kit burst into a full charge. The deer hissed their danger calls and bolted. Kit easily caught up to them and began snapping at their hooves. She was testing them. After a several mile chase, Kit leaped into the air and clamped her jaws down on the throat of a large sick doe. Both fell hard on the ground. Dodging flailing hooves, Kit tightened her grip and pulled. The deer died quickly from a broken neck and suffocation.

Now trying to catch her breath, Kit sat down next to her prey. She could no longer hold back her exhaustion. Her body now began to be encased by a bright light. Like the flashes of lightning, it was over; and Kit sat very irritated next to her prey in her “two-legged” form. She thumped her tail, showing her irritation. Then with shaky legs, rose to her feet. She walked back to her raccoon pelt. With pale skinned hands, she picked up her pelt before returning to her deer. When she got back, she noticed she was close to the smoke’s location. She grabbed both hind legs of the doe and with some effort; began to drag her kill.

After some time, she be-held the sight of a small cabin like building. Kit’s ears swiveled as she crept closer with her prey. She shivered slightly now that she was no longer covered with fur. Kit heaved forward and approaches the door. Once there, she pushed the door open and glanced around before pulling her prize inside with her.

Naira stepped into the living room several times to check on Entropy. The felcaeri was out cold - from either exhaustion or alcohol or both. After her third trip in (and second cup of tea), the reaver stealthily removed the towel and tossed it into a basket of stuff-to-be-washed.

When the half-dragon returned to the kitchen, she was greeted with the heavy aroma of snake stew and roasted veggies and ... the sight of an old orange tabby cat ayong on her kitchen table.

Naira blinked. "Uh ... You weren't here before."

It stared back at her nonchalantly. Golden eyes were half-lidded. A bushy tail thumped against the wood.

"Where did you come from?"

No response. She wasn't sure she expected one but this was Deep Forest ... You never knew. With a bit of hesitation, she reached a hand out. If this feline was feral she was about to get clawed. Instead it rose its head to meet her palm and purred loudly on contact.

Naira grinned, gently scratching it behind the ears. The feline mewed and leaned in. "Huh, well ... " The rain was falling heavily. Had been for a while now. A cool breeze settled in the home. "May as well make yourself cozy. I've got food cooking. I'll give you some too, yeah?"

Suddenly the outside clatter became louder, then dim again. The front door shut. Naira slipped into the main room. There before her was a soaked blue fox on two legs ... dragging a deer carcass in with her and effectively forming a trail of blood on the hardwood.

Welp ... She'd seen worse ...

"Kit?" Naira untreated with a tilted head. The thing looked similar. Same fur. About the same size ... The reaver gathered yet another towel and set it about the vulpine's shoulders.

She looked outside past Kit. It was getting darker. Lowering dangerously close, the cloud ceiling swirled. No defined structure ... And this terrain was uneven ... A tornado wouldn't drop here. Further out, perhaps. But it was so black outside ...

"Come in on. Dry off and warm up - I've got dinner going and ... " She was honestly a little floored about what to do with the deer. "I could bring this into the kitchen if you want? Help you clean and harvest the meat?" Naira nodded over her shoulder. "Entropy is here too. She's asleep."

Lightning flashed. Thunder roared.

For a flicker of a moment, Naira believed herself to hear the horrifyingly familiar screeches of some unsavory fiends. But when no more cries followed, she dismissed it as paranoia.

Kit had stopped in her tracks at the mention of her name. Her ears perked and yellow eyes beheld her former prey. But how did the reaver know it was her? She had the appearance of a young human girl, except for the fox ears and tail. Kit went to reply; but was stoped by the reaver draping a towel about her shoulders. Kit held the towel closed and nodded before dragging the deer behind her to the kitchen.

Once in the center of the kitchen, Kit dropped the deer and was looking around for a knife. Since she didn’t have claws in this state she had to be dependent on tools. Once she found the drawer filled with cutlery; Kit snatched up a butcher knife and padded over to the deer. She crouched down on her haunches and poked the deer to see where she should slice first.

Naira vanished back to her room. Maybe it was time to start making/hoarding clothes for people who might stumble upon the cabin looking worse for wear. She wondered if the village was still up and running. Could she purchase some garbs? Huh, maybe she could bargain a trade with Juno since her teleportation abilities were fizzled out. He always seemed to just have things, and she stopped questioning it a long time ago.

Well, if he was even still here. Entropy was. Maybe Nei? The kith? NORAD? (She swallowed hard at the last name.)

"I've got some clothes so you can get outta those soaked ones. They might be a bit baggy on you but - " Wheeling into the kitchen to see Kit with a butcher knife, Naira deftly plucked it from her fingers and replaced it with something narrower and sharper. "Have you ever field dressed a kill before ... ?"

Naira clicked her tongue. From the corner of her eyes she noticed the car was gone. Maybe it ran off to hide. Ah well.

"Ahh, it's alright. Here, get yourself out of those wet rags," she beamed, offering the fox-human some dry trousers and a shirt. "I'll teach ya. We'll need a tarp. It'll get messy - "

Here it was again.

That horrible shrieking.

Naira's blood ran cold. "No no. Please no."

--

The kitchen was lit, but the rest of the house had fallen dark under the powerful thunderhead's shadow. From the living room a screeching howl.

"THE LANTERNS, YOU FOOLS! LIGHT THE LANTERNS"

Naira burst through the kitchen door, pale-faced and horrified. "AWAY FROM THE WINDOWS AND WALLS!" she screamed. Something small and brown was bounding about the rooms and halls, hurriedly lighting lanterns as quick as a little body and spindly arms could manage. It was tiny - like a gremlin. No time for questions! "WRAITHS!"

A cacophony of putrid howls gathered from outside. Subhuman, at best. Tortured mewls like nails on a chalkboard, gathering in droves outside and getting closer.

They would not have the place fully lit in time ... and didn't, as the first shadows came pouring like a fine mist through the walls.

The screech awoke Entropy to a much-changed world. At first she thought it was a nightmare, but her mind was quick to assert that it was all real. And the first thing she saw was the trail of deer blood across the floor.

No! No!

"Naira!" she cried out in desperate terror as she bolted upright.

As she glanced around wildly, she saw that Naira was in fact still here, and... whatever was going on... the reptilian hunters weren't.

Something was going on, though. It may not have been any better than what she had feared. But... at least it wasn't that. She calmed down a fair bit, but not by more than the actual situation warranted.

Naira had said to get away from the windows and walls. Entropy thought that probably meant away from the couch, so she got up, pushed her hair out of her face and back behind her shoulders, and moved quickly to the center of the room.

"What's... going on?" she asked, voice still trembling. "... Lanterns?"

She saw... something... bounding about, firing up the lights along the walls.

Entropy had some of her magic back. She'd used a lot of it escaping from her captors, and gained back much less of it since, but she still had enough to work with. She really needed to recover fully, but she would have to live long enough for that to happen.

Putting two-and-two together, she pinpointed some of the lanterns that weren't close to the unknown creature and sent a burst of flame one-by-one flying from her extended finger to each.

Seeing the ghost-like beings already emerging through the walls, Entropy hoped her efforts weren't too little too late...

Kit was surprised by the reaver taking the butcher knife away from her and replacing it with something else. She looked at the knife and thumped her tail. She didn’t notice the reaver leaving the room until she came back with clothes. The reaver wanted her to wear some clothes. Kit blinked and looked at them. Indeed they were going to be big on her.

Suddenly the reaver began to act strange. She grew fearful. Kit was confused until the reaver screamed out “wraiths”. Kit was now very irritated. She couldn’t catch a break and have peace! Kit threw down the knife and went to follow the reaver but was grabbed by her scraps of cloth she wore. Kit looked over her shoulder to see a shadowed figure. Great. Kit growled at it and summoned enough energy to release a fire ball in it. It shrieked and yanked away from her; unfortunately also taking her remaining clothing from her body. Kit fell to the floor completely exposed. Now she was mad. Kit barked and got to her feet. She threw on a shirt which was too big. She looked like a baby wearing her parents clothes. Kit went to go after the reaver and kept stumbling over the bottom of the shirt.

Above the dim roar of thunder came the howls of monsters. Dozens. Hundreds. More? They flooded in from tge Evergreen, driven by a singular urge shared by the multitude.

Those that wisped through the walls recoiled back when drawing close to candlelight. One small flame would be nothing but an irritant but several in a row acted as an effective barrier.

These creatures were gaseous, culminated figures if ashen smoke as if pulled from smoldering ruins. The eyes were mere slits of a lightless abyss. Plumes formed the shapes of oblong fangs, edging the bottomless pits that were supposed to be their mouths. If legs were present, they were hidden in tge mist or invisible. Long, lanky arms tipped with what appeared to be hooked claws were evident, however. They reached hungrily for whoever was close.

"Don't let them touch you!" shouted Naira. She had thrown open a drawer and was rummagibg through it in a flurry. Items of different origins went flying across the room. "Stay in the light!"

"They wouldn't be here if you had the lanterns lit!" snapped the small brown creature. It's motions slowed with each wick it set aflame. Elf-like with pointed ears but sporting a long, crooked nose, the thing had flesh the color of tanned leather. Fine white hair drifted under an aged red cap in tufts, tangling with strands growing from the ears. This being stood no taller than a foot, and that was being modest. "Foolish man-beasts, ignorant all the same!"

"Just how in the hell was I supposed to know there were Wraiths in Deep Forest?!" the Reaver snarled. "And just what are you?!"

"Don't you know a brùnaidh when you see one?! This innit Whatsit Forest, you're in lands of the fair folk!"

Naira shot the brownie a brief confused glare until her hands found the object in question. Whooping with joy, she held up a flashlight (da Da DA DAAAAA), whipped it around at the closest wraith, and flipped the switch.

What followed was a series of curses, trailed by, "- dead batteries!" and the hurling of it at the above monster. It drifted through the incorporeal body and struck the wall in the other side. "Fire - need fire - but please don't burn down the damn house!"

Welp, when all else fails ... Naira withdrew a book of matches.

With the lights in the kitchen and main hall, the wraiths were large avoiding the downstairs. But they swarmed in dark room, gathering aloft in bedrooms closets, the basement ...

(Free play time! Control the wraiths as you will. :) They do not speak and cannot be physically attacked with weapons. Magic cannot cause damage, but the light from fire will cause them to flee.)

Entropy still didn't know what exactly was going on, but lighting up the room seemed to have kept the ghost-like creatures out of it. She hoped the lanterns would last longer than these wraiths would stick around.

So, don't let them touch you, and stay in the light.

The room she was in seemed safest at this point, so that was where she stayed.

Kit fell into the room where Entropy was; she growled in frustration at the shirt she was wearing. Kit then decided to ditch the shirt for now since it only seemed to slow her down. She wanted to find the reaver and help get these pests away. She threw off the shirt and scampered upstairs and found the reaver and a tiny weird looking creature. A wraith began to approach the reaver from behind. Kit didn’t have time to speak. She barked angrily and released a fireball past the reaver, hitting the wraith causing it to scream.
